School Sport Premium

School Sport Premium is an amount of money which the government allocates to schools. As with last year, this year (2020 - 2021) funding awarded to each school has almost doubled. Last year, the funding amount schools receive is based upon the number of children of primary age the school has plus £16,000.
Our Sports Premium allowance for the academic year 2021-2022 is £16,810. In addition to this, we carried over £3,243 from 2020-2021 making this year’s total £20,053.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.  This means that schools should use the premium to:
  1. develop or add to the PE and sport activities that the school already offers
  2. make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
The Department for Education states its vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium to be:
ALL pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

1. the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
2. the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
3. increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
4. broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
5. increased participation in competitive sport

Laurel Avenue Community Primary once again achieved GOLD in the School Games Mark 2023, for the fourth time.

The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of PE, sport and competition across their school. We were assessed against the following criteria:
  • Commitment to a minimum of 2 hours of physical education per week
  • Participation in intra-school competitions (within school)
  • Participation in inter-school competitions (external competitions)
  • Leadership schemes
  • Extra-curricular clubs
  • Promotion of external providers
  • Provision in place to develop ‘Gifted and Talented’ children
  • Promotion of results and reports for newsletters/website
  • Continued Professional Development of school staff to support PE
We are very proud of this award and of our children’s achievements and look forward to another great year full of sport and fun! This award is difficult to achieve due to the high level of commitment needed, especially within a small school such as ours, so we are extremely thrilled and proud! Well done everyone!

School Sport Partnership (SSP) (2023-2024)

For many years our school has been involved in the Durham School Sport Partnership through a Service Level Agreement (SLA). At Laurel Avenue we have chosen to opt in to the Gold SLA package during 2023-2024 at a cost of £5,800. This gives us the freedom to hire coaches ourselves who have previously worked very successfully in our school, but also ensures we can still work closly with the School Sport Partnership.
